The article considers the issue of political participation in the light of the debate on electoral abstentionism in Europe. What is the relationship between voter abstention and participation? Is abstention a sign of disease in the democracy? What is the relationship between willingness to participate and the possibility of doing so through the party system? Rereading some theoretical contributions in the context of the debate on contemporary democracy, the author presents some methodological proposals to position such discussion in a reflection framework he considers more appropriate.

O artigo considera a problemtática da participação política à luz do debate sobre abstencionismo eleitoral na Europa. Qual relação entre abstenção eleitoral e participação? A abstenção é sinal de doença da democracia? Qual relação entre vontade de participar e a possibilidade de fazê-lo através do sistema partidário? Repercorrendo algumas contribuições teóricas no âmbito do debate sobre democracia contemporânea, o autor apresenta algumas propostas metodológicas para posicionar tal discussão num quadro de reflexão que considera mais apropriado.
