Witchcraft and concubinage in colonial Pernambuco

Abstract

The Prosecutor's notebooks have proven to be an extremely rich source for all researchers looking into the Inquisition Tribunal, though they have appeared randomly in the papers on the subject. Its richness may perhaps be better understood by not only containing "official" denunciations, since a simple letter - or a small note, sometimes written in poor Portuguese - sent by an illustrious stranger, could end up there. All of this documentation allows us to get in touch with a wide variety of offenses, beyond the usual ones we are used to reading in the vast bibliography concerning the Inquisition. In the same book we find denunciations of the most diverse regions of the Portuguese empire, grouped at first only by a certain chronological order; and of the hundreds of stories that were recorded in the Prosecutor's dozens of notebooks, only a small part actually became inquisitorial proceedings. But these records are no less important to the researcher. This is precisely the case we deal with in this text, involving colonial clergy with magical and concubinage practices. Illustrative even of the fact that the implicated priest was not even bothered by the Tribunal of the Holy Office.

Resumo

Os cadernos do Promotor têm-se mostrado uma fonte extremament rica para todos os pesquisadores que se debruçam sobre o Tribunal de Inquisição, embora tenha aparecido aleatoriamente nos trabalhos que versam sobre o tema. Sua riqueza talvez possa ser melhor compreendida por não conter apenas denúncias "oficiais", já que uma simples carta - ou um pequeno bilhete, às vezes escrito num sofrível português-, remetida por um ilustre desconhecido, poderia ir lá parar. Toda essa documentação nos permite entrar em contato com uma grande variedade de delitos, para além dos usuais que estamos acostumados a ler na vasta bibliografia respeitante à Inquisição. Num mesmo caderbi encontramos denúncias das mais diversas regiões do império português, agrupadas a princípio apenas por certa ordem cronológica; e das centenas de histórias que ficaram registradas nas dezenas de cadernos do Promotor, somente uma pequena parte chegou a se transformar, de fato, em processos inquisitoriais. Mas nem por isso tais registros são menos importantes para o pesquisador. Esse é justamente o caso que abordamos neste texto, envolvendo o clero colonial com práticas mágicas e de mancebia. Ilustrativo inclusive pelo facto do implicado, um padre, sequer ter sido incomodado pelo Tribunal do Santo Ofício.
