'For Whom the Bell Tolls': traditions of white and black burials between Brazil and Angola. 18th and 19th centuries

This article seeks to approximate lived realities between mainly two Portuguese conquests: Recife, in Pernambuco, and Luanda, in Angola. The central theme is the burial rituals performed in these places and read through the documentation of the Brotherhood of Black Men of Vila do Recife, confronted with a Debret watercolor, which represents the burial of a black woman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We will use more than one primary source; These are a band from the Luanda region, proclaimed by the government of Francisco de Souza Coutinho and the chronicle by Elias Alexandre, titled "History of Angola". The combination of this documentation and the narrative construction seek to demonstrate how the cultures in contact on both sides of the Atlantic have merged. The daily life of the time in question, verified through the sources, demonstrates the non-existence of a complete cultural domination of the conqueror. The research points out that the contacts point out that there was a strong backward colonization, which occurred when rituals of Catholic Christianity were resignified and reformulated by the inhabitants of the new worlds, these, created by the Iberian presence and, much more strongly by the Portuguese influence in the places observed for our investigation. From these considerations we begin our argumentative narrative.

Esse artigo busca aproximar realidades vividas entre principalmente duas conquistas portuguesas: o Recife, em Pernambuco, e Luanda, em Angola. O tema central são os rituais de enterramento realizados nesses locais e lidos através da documentação da Irmandade dos Homens Pretos da Vila do Recife, confrontada a uma aquarela de Debret, que representa o enterramento de uma negra, no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Utilizaremos mais de uma fonte primária; sendo estas um bando da região de Luanda, proclamado no governo de Francisco de Souza Coutinho e a crônica de Elias Alexandre, intitulada "História de Angola". A junção dessa documentação e a construção da narrativa procuram demonstrar como se mesclaram as culturas em contato em ambas as margens do Atlântico. O cotidiano da época em tela, verificado por meio das fontes, demonstra a não existência de uma dominação cultural completa do conquistador. A investigação sinaliza que os contatos havidos apontam que houve uma forte colonização às avessas, acontecida quando rituais do cristianismo católico foram ressignificados e reformulados pelos habitantes dos novos mundos, estes, criados, pela presença ibérica e, muito mais fortemente pela influência portuguesa nos lugares tratados por nossa investigação. A partir dessas considerações iniciamos nossa narrativa argumentativa.
