This article examines the behavior of marriage in Portugal in the context of the debate on the decline of social differences in Europe since 1880, seen from the perspective of the universalization of the "European Family" and marriage. The extensive exploration of the Portuguese Historical Sample on Social Mobility (HSPSM) allows us to test the hypothesis of changes in the patterns of conubial behavior and the modernization of family relations in Portugal from 1860-1960. The results obtained on the evolution of social homogamy, access to marriage and remarriage, and the social opportunities resulting from marriage by gender and social classes, point to the existence of a process of social modernization throughout that century that was particularly contained.
